La presenza Smyth nella produzione di cucitrici per libri è datata al 1871 quando David McConnel Smyth ottenne il Suo primo brevetto e nel 1882 la Smyth Manufacturing Company di Hartford, USA, iniziò la produzione in serie della cucitrice, apportando un progresso sostanziale alla tecnologia della legatura del libro.
Negli anni, le cucitrici Smyth ebbero un ruolo importante nel mercato mondiale grazie alla qualità e performance delle proprie macchine.
Nel 1958 fu costituita la Smyth Europea voluta dalla Smyth Manufacturing Company, con l’obbiettivo primario di disporre di una base operativa e manifatturiera nell’area del Mercato Comune Europeo.
La Smyth Europea trasse buona esperienza da quella iniziale struttura societaria, il Know-how tecnico di origine USA, integrato dall’apporto inventivo delle maestranze italiane, diede risultati molto positivi ed immediatamente apprezzati sia dal mercato nazionale che dai mercati europei.
All’inizio degli anni ‘70, la Smyth Manufacturing Company decise di interrompere la propria attività industriale trasferendo disegni e know-how alla Smyth Europea e cedendo la Sua partecipazione azionaria ad un gruppo di azionisti italiani.
In virtù dell’indipendenza societaria acquisita, la Smyth Europea proseguì con vigore la propria espansione, sostituendosi alla Casa Madre Americana nel mercato mondiale, in un primo tempo nel settore cucitrici a filo refe e successivamente nel settore delle linee di produzione del libro cartonato.
All’inizio del 1996 per la Smyth Europea si rese indispensabile una profonda ristrutturazione del proprio assetto societario e manageriale.
Nasce, così, la Nuova Smyth, erede della gloriosa Smyth Europea, con una nuova compagine societaria, affidabile ed attiva nel settore.
Si parte bene, con molte iniziative sia in ambito tecnico che commerciale, scelte tecnologiche di grande respiro, strategie commerciali proiettate al recupero di prestigio del nome e marchio Freccia Smyth in tutto il mondo.

Smyth’s initial production of sewing machines for books commenced in 1871 when David McConnel Smyth obtained his first patent. In 1882 the Smyth Manufacturing Company in Hartford, USA, began production of the sewing machine, resulting in significant progress in bookbinding technology.
In the following years, the Smyth sewing machines gained an important role in the world market due to the machine’s production, quality and performance.
In 1958 Smyth Europea was established, because Smyth Manufacturing Company wanted an operational and manufacturing base in the area of the European Common Market.
Smyth Europea gained much experience from Smyth, USA, with regard to technical know-how and with the contribution of Italian knowledge produced very positive results which were immediately appreciated by the National market and by European markets.
In the early 1970s, the Smyth Manufacturing Company decided to cease their manufacturing activity, transferring drawings and know-how to Smyth Europea and passing ownership to the Italians.
Having obtained company indipendence, Smyth Europea continued their expansion vigorously, replacing the American parent company in the world market, in the beginning in the field of thread sewing machines and later with casing-in lines for hard cover book production.
In the early 1996, to take advantage of the new market opportunities opening up, the old company was completely re-structured and Nuova Smyth has been established combining the traditions of Smyth Europea, with a new experienced Management structure resulting in a reliable and active company in this market.

Technical Specifications
The equation of the FOUR DYNAMICS is the mathematical definition of the FOUR MOTIONS of the signatures involved with the FRECCIA 4D FEEDER.
The programming and the controls of the Machine are equipped with a Microprocessor specifically built for the Freccia 4D Sewers.
The Monitor and Keyboard of the Computer are positioned on a Pivoting Console for easy accessibility from either side of the sewer (front sewing area and signature loading rear area).
The Lap Opener device is always fitted on the Freccia 4D in order to improve the opening versatility of the feeder.
The device is controlled by means of the Programming Computer which operates the device as an Integrated Opening Unit for the suckers.
In addition to the 4+4 sucker openers, the signatures with a lap on the upper or on the lower side, can be opened by means of the Lap Opener.
It is also possible to feed books having a mix of signatures "without" lap (sucker opening) and "with" lap (lap opening).

Technical Specifications
The thread cutting off automatically operated with Blind Stitch. No adjustment is required. The reforming wheel operates in conjunction with the signature transport chain and reforms even the tightest and thickest signature to ensure that the stitches are exactly centred.
The kicker wheel transfers the signature from the Fixed Saddle to the Mobile Saddle of the Sewer.
The speed and the height of the Kicker Wheel is easily adjustable to accommodate the various signatures ensuring that the signature is placed precisely on the top of the mobile saddle of the sewing machine.

L’equazione delle 4 DINAMICHE è la definizione matematica dei 4 MOVIMENTI delle segnature del METTIFOGLIO FRECCIA 4D.
Il sistema di gestione/controllo della Cucitrice è costituito da un Microprocessore progettato appositamente per le Cucitrici Freccia 4D. Per facilitare gli interventi dell’operatore da entrambi i lati della Cucitrice (area di cucitura e area di caricamento segnature) il video e la tastiera sono posizionati su di una Console Pivottante.
Il dispositivo Lap Opener, sempre installato sulle Cucitrici Freccia 4D, aumenta la versatilità di apertura del mettifoglio.
È controllato dal computer di programmazione che ne dispone l’attivazione come sistema integrato agli aspiratori, per l’apertura delle segnature.
Oltre alle 4+4 aperture normalmente gestite dagli aspiratori, possono essere aperte meccanicamente con il lap opener, le segnature provviste di unghia, sia essa posizionata sul lembo superiore o su quello inferiore. In tal modo è permessa e prevista l’alimentazione di libri con un mix di segnature senza unghia (aperte dagli aspiratori) e con unghia (aperte meccanicamente dal Lap Opener).

L'apparecchio tagliafilo funziona automaticamente con il Punto a Vuoto. Non è richiesta alcuna regolazione. La ruota di riformatura lavora in unione con la catena di trasporto delle segnature. Riforma le segnature sul dorso assicurando la cucitura in centro.
La ruota di lancio trasferisce la segnatura dalla Sella Fissa alla Sella Mobile della Cucitrice. La velocità della Ruota di Lancio è facilmente regolabile in base allo spessore delle segnature assicurando che il dorso di ogni segnatura sia posto esattamente sulla sommità della Sella Mobile della Cucitrice.

The Freccia Mod. "Systema" Gathering and Sewing System combines the Mod. "P" Freccia Smyth Gathering Machine and two or more Freccia 4D Automatic Sewing Machines, automating most of the previous operations which were carried out manually in the production of sewn book blocks. By employing new technology, sewing and gathering costs have been dramatically reduced, minimizing labour costs and increasing production. Setting times are kept to a minimum and with better utilisation of costly floor space efficient gains are made in the production and organisation of the bindery.
Handling a wide range of signature sizes, the unit is simple in operation with reliable and proven mechanical and automatic systems. With computer control and programming the "Combinato" is cost effective and will contribute to improving the profits of the bindery. The Freccia Smyth Mod. "Unit" Automatic Gathering and Sewing System connects the Freccia Model "P" Gatherer to one or two Freccia 4D sewing machine.
The single Sewer System is distinguished by its low investment and the requirement of one operator permitting even short runs and low signature content of books to be produced economically.
The double Sewer System requires two operators and allows greater flexibility and increased production with an attractive initial investment. The computer assists setting and guides the operator with programming procedures, also aids the direction and control of the whole system.
